Steam Hotel

SPA hotels and golfing seems to be the flavor this summer for me and J who just started playing golf with me. Last week we wnt on another mini vacation to Västerås and Steam hotel.

One has to stay positive in this world that is unfolding at the moment. I’m greatful that we are able to travel within Sweden. This summer we have really taken the chance to explore golf packages and SPA hotels in around Sweden. We try to not travel too far from Stockholm. This time we went to Steam Hotel in Västerås, just a little more than an hours drive from Stockholm.
We stayed for two nights in a superior lake view room. The first night we had packaged now called “The View” and for the second night we had the golf package called Boogeys and Beers.

Since Corona is still a issue there it is a little different to go to hotels at the moment. Every hotels has its own precautions on how to stay safe.

Steam Hotel stays are a little unique because your stay is pretty much planned out for you. You get a time-slot for the SPA and your dinner, and even breakfast.

In our package for the first night it included entry to Voltage lounge (which is the SPA). THey have 3 different time-slots and depending on the package you choose you get a time-slot. We had the first time-slot 15:00-17:30. It is important you are on time since the SPA, despite time-slots get pretty crowded. The Voltage lounge has a outside pool, a bar, a inside pool, relax room (my personal favorite), gym, and saunas. They also have a bar which serve both inside and outside.
After the SPA our package included a dinner at Locavore, their fine dining restaurant with a great view over Västerås. Even if you are not having dinner here, you should go up for a drink. We were served a 4 course menue, where we had the chance to pick our starter and main course. I opted for sashimi and the strip steak. The food was delicious and service great!

The following day we had our breakfast at the Locavore restaurant. At the moment they do not serve buffé, but they serve you by the table. It worked great. After that we were of to Västerås Golfklubb to go for 18-hole round. The course was unique and alot of fun.

Coming back our package for day two had us for a time-slot in the SPA 17:00-20:00 and dinner at The Chamberlin (their restaurant on the ground floor). The package included a 3-course menue where you got to choose from the a la carte menue, but some dishes was subject to extra charges. The food was not nearly as good as the dinner the night before, but still pretty good.

Chamberlin restaurant

Chamberlin restaurant

Breakfast the following morning was served in the Chamberlin as well. Alot more people in this restaurant and the service in the morning was not good. Snorky waiter and alot of waiting.

I would definitely always book the package with Locavore option since I felt the service there was a little better.,

Steam hotel superior lake view room 514

Review Summary:

  • Rooms: 4/5

    • We stayed in room 514, a superior room with lake view. You do want a lake view room. It is worth the extra 200 SEK to upgrade. The rooms are not too big, ours was a corner room which made it a little bigger than the rest.

  • Service: 3/5

    • Staff was good in the reception and in the Locavore lounge, however the service throughout the hotel varied a lot.

  • Bed: 4/5

    • Very comfortable

  • Amenities: 3/5

    • The Voltage lounge (SPA) is really nice. The only downside is that it is very crowded, even in Corona-times when they claim to have less guests than usual. They also do not offer any treatments which I really think a SPA should. The relax area ( 8 beds with a fireplace in the middle) is my personal favourite. They also do not have any hot tubs. The SPA they have is nice, I just wished they had a little more. They have focused on relaxing areas where you can cozy up with a loved one.

Also good to know is that the lounge turn a little more party on the latest time-slot, so it is more club-like.

  • Price: $$$

    • The view package including 1 welcome glass of champagne, SPA Entry, 4 course meal at Locavore (drinks not included), and breakfast costs for a weekday at the moment about 3300 SEK, which is approximatley 319 EUR / 377 USD for two ppl, which I think is pretty cheap for what you are getting.

    • The Boogeys and beers including 3-course, SPA entry, greenfee and breakfast cost about 3700 SEK = 358 EUR / 423 USD for two ppl which I think is a little expensive due to the fact that the service and the food is not as good. Considering the green fee is 475 SEK / pp it is still a pretty good deal.

  • Stars: 4

  • Extra points for outstanding things: 0

    • Nothing outstanding, except the decor throughout the hotel is really nice.

  • Tips and tricks: Definitely book a package including dinner att Locavore, and also choose one with a earlier SPA entry to skip the party feel. This is a great hotel for lovebirds, but also for friends and family.

Total 14/20 points which means I think it is worth a visit.
